I’m at work on a Sunday, I need to get my PhD finished. I’ve decided to stick updates on here so you guys can nag me to keep going, cos motivation is very, very, very, very, very, very, very hard to keep up.
Ok so don’t expect regular updates, cos I’m still working to produce results as well as writing up, so the writing will probably be kind of irregular. I have the whole chapter structure mapped out, and I’m sticking it down here more for myself than anything else, so I can tick things off as I go, and I figure if I do it in public it’ll maybe help me get going. This’ll be shorthand so just ignore it, but i’ll tick things off as i go.
1. Intro
2. WSN – half done – aim to finish by end february
3. Multicarrier modulation – mapped out/structured easyish to write
4. Data extraction / Orient / OFDMA system – pretty much done, needs tidied up
5. Frequency offset estimation algorithms and implementation
6. Node implementation – NCO parameterised/performance curves trade-offs… – work done by mid march maybe, written up by end (optimistic)
7. Possible intra-net comms extension
8. Conclusions.
Maybe I’ll try for weekly updates / goals. Before I leave today I’m going to have ch.2 properly mapped out, maybe a bit of writing done. Paper to write/finish before wednesday, should be ok, work for it will go into ch.6 so that’s cool.
I’m going to look back on this post one day as Dr Macca, oh yes I will.
Oh, and people who are particularly helpful / motivational may be lucky enough to get a mention in my acknowledgements.

Gloves are in the post. I want a mention!

Macca,
I’m in crisis mode too at the minute. In work on a Sunday. Thesis plans are non-existent, and I have to submit in October. In total denial about the situation. Remember how we got ourselves through the INSA ordeal? I reckon we can do it again. Remeber the INSA code, never leave a man when he’s down!

What exactly are your symptoms? Mine are total paralysis when it’s come to actually doing anything productive, and displacement activities aplenty. Lots of checking my email, online newspapers and wikipedia. Reading about economics all the time too…

I’m awful for reading the internet. BBC News, BBC Football, The Herald, ESPN Soccer + Dons news are the main culprits.
I have a total inability to concentrate for longer than about half an hour at a time.
I recently installed (Greg’s recommendation) the MeeTimer plugin for firefox, which is pretty effective, it let’s you know how much time you’re wasting on websites that you stipulate.
I actually quite like doing the writing part of the thesis. Still doesn’t make me work any harder tho.
I’m absolutely gagging (and have been for about a year now) to have some pressure on me, deadlines and stuff to work to. It’s starting to come now, cos I’ve only one more pay packet coming my way. About time.

Macca,
I don’t even know you! Robin sent me the link to your blog while we were discussing our own sorry situations! I’m working on a sunday too (well trying to work). I’ve found that hot cross buns and tea are a boost to the crisis situation producing the slightly odd side effect of fast writing! Could just be me…
Hang in there!
Kate.

Thanks Kate! Good luck to you too.
The fecking heating doesn’t even work in Uni at the weekend, so my hands are almost too cold to type. I’m on the coffee. And leftover chinese takeaway from last night.

Just installed meetimer, looks like it could help.
I’ve found myself “cycling”. Going between the usual suspect websites until something interesting happens on one.
Hi Kate!

Maybe we should stop talking and start doing some work…

ooh, where do I put wikipedia in my meetimer? I think I have to be honest and put it in procrastination…
February 17, 2008 at 2:31 pm |
yeh, installing the MeeTimer was a good diversion for a few minutes!

Yeah, I’ve registered all the usual suspects. I’m now officially procrastinating. Back to work!

How you getting on baby, eh I mean, Macca?
February 17, 2008 at 6:02 pm |
Turned off my meetimer and I’m going home. I only wasted 41 minutes today.
